Learn How To Be A Better Technical Writer

What is it about writing that troubles engineers? What makes engineers so scared of writing? Why are so many of us reluctant to write for work?

OTT’s online technical writing course for engineers answers these questions and shows you how to change habits to teach you how to write fluently, directly, and persuasively. It goes right back to middle school grammar and presents the rules, conventions, and suggestions for clear communication, and gives you skills every engineer needs to master technical writing.

Technical writing for engineers doesn’t have to be difficult or scary. Our course teaches the skills every engineer needs to become a better technical writer.

A Technical Writing Course for Engineers

This online course is designed and delivered by a professional engineer for professional engineers.

I know how engineers naturally put the object of a sentence before the subject. I have seen unnecessarily wordy text for four decades. I know how engineers are welded to the passive case (“the mat was seated upon by the cat”) instead of the immediate and fresh active case (“the cat sat on the mat”). I am tired of our love of auxiliary verbs (“the vibrator was used to eliminate the air in the concrete,” instead of “the vibrator eliminated the air in the concrete”).

This course takes on these engineering writing peculiarities. The course focuses on the way we as engineers write now, and how we should write.

Starting with a direct presentation of basic grammar rules, I will show you how to evaluate your own writing. I look at words, then sentences, then paragraphs, and then punctuation. I look at the rules. You will see how some rules can be bent (I call these “infractions”) and how some rules are near-sacred (“felonies”).

Then we take all these rules and look at how they influence our style. Yes, style.

The course will show you that as engineers, we need to choose from a range of writing styles, depending on our purpose. We look at the most formal, for contractual writing. We look at business style so we can communicate effectively with our peers. We see how to adjust our text for the public, project sponsors, and politicians.

You’ll learn how breaking the rules makes your writing unclear, bloated with unnecessary words, and lacking in detail. You’ll learn the technical writing skills for engineers that you weren’t taught in school.

You’ll learn to be a better technical writer.

How Will You Benefit from This Technical Writing Course?

Why Choose This Technical Writing Course?

This Technical Writing for Engineers Course Is Up to Date

Language is ever-changing. Styles, conventions, and even words change, and technology is driving change as never before. Migration and the influx of engineers from overseas bring change.

Words change. “Shall” and “ought” are being replaced by “should” and “can.” The infinitive is losing its place. We write “we tried compacting” instead of “we tried to compact.” Texting makes us write fewer words, which is good, providing the meaning is preserved.

This course is written for today, for today’s rules.

This Course Is Online and Interactive

The course is delivered live to your desktop through video conferencing. This means you will see, hear, and interact with your instructor in real-time.
